Ceremonial shovels went into the ground on April 29, 2026, in the Independence Title parking lot on Shepherd Mountain Cove. The photo op lasted an afternoon. The construction schedule attached to it runs into late 2029, and it will quietly reshape how anyone living inside 78746 gets in and out of the neighborhood for the next three and a half years.
If you already live here, the question is not whether the project is a good idea. It is which months you should plan around, which routes will still be usable, and which pieces of the plan the general news coverage has skimmed past.
The project, stated cleanly
TxDOT is rebuilding two closely spaced intersections on Loop 360. The main lanes will be sunk under Courtyard Drive so the current signal is gone, and RM 2222 will be reconfigured as a diverging diamond interchange. Shared use paths and sidewalks are folded in. The budget lands at $68.4 million, funded jointly by TxDOT and the City of Austin's 2016 mobility bond.
